Jessica Shi is finishing a collection of short stories titled Female Muscle: No Experience Necessary. The stories explore migration, lineage, and questions of identity and belonging among first-generation Chinese Americans. At McDowell, worked on her first novel, Fortune Laundry, which follows the story of three generations of a Chinese family in California during the 60 years of Chinese Exclusion. Halfway through the first draft, she realized the voice was wrong and started over. During her residency, she discovered not only the freedom to create but the freedom to re-create as well.
