Joseph Spece split his youth between Long Island and Massachusetts. His first book of poems, Roads, was published in 2013 and his avant-garde long volume of poems Bad Zoo was published in 2018. He worked on a manuscript for a second book tentativly titled How the Drowned Surface. Some people he admires are: G.M. Hopkins, E. Dickinson, E. Bronte, Tom Brady, H. Melville, Martha Graham, Erik Satie, Roger Federer, and Egon Schiele.

Marian MacDowell funded construction of this studio the year that the organization was established and the first artists arrived for residency.
