Lisa Carey grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts, attended Boston College and worked as a bookseller at Brookline Booksmith while getting her M.F.A. in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She began her first novel on a trip to Ireland, and spent the next five years living there. She has written five novels: The Mermaids Singing, In the Country of the Young, Love in the Asylum, which won a Massachusetts Book award, and Every Visible Thing, which won a Lambda Literary Award for Fiction. Her newest novel, The Stolen Child, is due out in February, 2017. She has been awarded fellowships at The Hawthornden Castle Writer’s Retreat, The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig, MacDowell, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Ragdale. She lives in Portland, Maine, with her husband and son, and returns to Ireland whenever she can.
