Discipline: Music Composition
Region: Brooklyn, NY
MacDowell Fellowships: 2012, 2021

Saxophonist and composer Sarah Manning is a musical storyteller. While at MacDowell, she wrote many of the compositions on her upcoming release for Posi-Tone Records, with a release date of January 21, 2014. Harmonious Creature features Manning on alto saxophone, Eyvind Kang on viola, Jonathan Goldberger on guitar, Rene Hart on bass, and Jerome Jennings on drums.

At MacDowell, Manning was visited by many creatures that offered inspiration -- from a bear to coyote, porcupine, barn owl, and yellow spotted salamander. She has vowed to pay attention to the owls and salamanders that take the creative process away from so much self scrutiny, and instead show it as a natural reflection of the world around us.

As a bandleader, Manning has performed at concert halls and clubs across the United States from Yoshi's in Oakland, CA to Dizzy's Club Coca Cola in New York and the 2011 Tanglewood Jazz Festival. As a sideperson in 2012, she performed alongside John Zorn with Jewish Afrobeat band Zion80 at a residency at the Stone in New York. She toured Austria with the band in August for the 2013 Saalfelden Jazz Festival.
